Summit to Shore is the ultimate Tanzanian adventure: seven days climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the scenic Machame route, followed by five nights of recovery and celebration on Nungwi's white-sand beach in Zanzibar.
The Machame route — often called the "Whiskey Route" for its challenge — takes you through five distinct climate zones, from rainforest to alpine desert to arctic summit, culminating at Uhuru Peak, Africa's highest point at 5,895 meters. Then, with your certificate in hand and your legs finally at rest, trade your trekking poles for a sun lounger as you recover, celebrate, and unwind on one of Zanzibar's most beautiful stretches of coastline. This is achievement and paradise, back to back.
7 days, 5 climate zones
5,895m, Africa's highest point
5 nights of rest and celebration
Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, but the driest and clearest conditions fall in late June through October and again from December through February, both of which pair well with calm, sunny weather in Zanzibar for the recovery portion.
January and February also bring cooler, quieter conditions on the mountain with fewer trekkers on the route. Avoid the long rains in April–May, when trails are slippery and summit visibility drops, and note that this itinerary already builds in an acclimatization day on the Machame route to improve your chances of a successful summit regardless of season.
After a final gear check and briefing in Moshi, you're driven to Machame Gate to register and begin your climb. The trail winds through lush montane rainforest, alive with colobus monkeys and birdsong, gaining altitude steadily toward your first camp at the forest's edge.
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail climbs through heath and moorland onto the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest volcanic calderas in the world. Views of Kilimanjaro's summit open up ahead as the vegetation thins with altitude.
A key acclimatization day: the trail climbs to the Lava Tower at 4,600m for lunch — "climb high, sleep low" — before descending into the lush Barranco Valley, where giant senecio plants line the path. This up-and-down profile is one of the best ways to prepare your body for summit night.
A short but thrilling day begins with the scramble up the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb that's one of the trek's most memorable mornings. From the top, the trail undulates across ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp, with the summit looming closer than ever.
A relatively short trekking day brings you into the stark alpine desert of Barafu Camp, your base for summit night. The afternoon is spent resting, hydrating, and going over final preparations with your guide before an early dinner and a few hours of sleep ahead of the midnight departure.
Departing around midnight, you climb steadily by headlamp through the darkness, reaching Stella Point on the crater rim as the sky begins to lighten. From there, a final push along the crater's edge brings you to Uhuru Peak, 5,895 meters and the roof of Africa, just as the sun rises over the clouds below. After time to celebrate and take photos, descend all the way to Mweka Camp, dropping into thicker air and warmer temperatures.
A final gentle descent through the forest brings you to Mweka Gate, where you'll receive your summit certificate and say farewell to your mountain crew with a celebratory toast. From there, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight to Zanzibar. On arrival, a private transfer takes you north to Nungwi, home to some of Zanzibar's most beautiful beaches — check into your beachfront resort and let the recovery begin.
A full day dedicated to doing absolutely nothing strenuous. Swim in the calm, shallow turquoise waters of Nungwi, nap in the shade, or simply let your legs recover after summit night. The beach here is known for being swimmable at every tide, unlike much of Zanzibar's east coast.
Today's highlight is a dedicated recovery spa treatment, designed to ease muscles that spent the last week climbing Africa's highest peak. Between treatments, relax by the pool or on the sand, and reflect on the past week's achievement with a well-earned cocktail as the sun goes down.
Today is yours to enjoy at your own pace. Choose to join an optional excursion to historic Stone Town for a guided tour of its winding alleys, the former Sultan's Palace, and the House of Wonders, or opt for a gentle snorkeling trip to the nearby reefs. In the late afternoon, consider an optional sunset dhow cruise along the coast to celebrate the summit in style. Otherwise, simply continue relaxing on the beach.
Your last full day in paradise. Spend it however you wish — one more swim, a walk along the beach at sunrise, or simply lounging with a good book. In the evening, enjoy a celebratory farewell dinner at the resort's restaurant, toasting the journey from Barafu Camp's midnight departure to Nungwi's shores.
Enjoy a final breakfast with ocean views and a last swim in the warm Indian Ocean before checkout. A private transfer will take you to Zanzibar's Abeid Amani Karume International Airport for your onward flight, with connections available via Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, or Addis Ababa. Depart with your summit certificate, a well-rested body, and memories of Africa's highest peak and its most beautiful beaches.

Nashivai Safaris is a locally owned and operated safari and trekking company based in Arusha, Tanzania. Summit to Shore is our answer to travelers who want both the challenge of Kilimanjaro and the reward of a proper beach recovery afterward, with experienced mountain crews and a seamless handover to our Zanzibar team.
Reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise was the hardest thing I've ever done, and landing in Nungwi a few hours later felt almost unfair in the best way. The recovery spa day on Day 9 was exactly what my legs needed.
— Tom H., Australia • September 2025Our guide team on the Machame route was outstanding — patient, experienced, and genuinely invested in getting us to the top. Pairing the climb with five nights in Nungwi afterward was the best decision we made when booking this trip.
