6 Days Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route
Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
Distance: ~11 km
Time: 5–7 hours
Elevation: 1,800m → 2,850m
Highlights: Steep rainforest trail filled with mossy trees, giant ferns, and the calls of tropical birds.
Your adventure begins at Umbwe Gate, where you’ll register and start your ascent through the dense, untouched rainforest. The trail is steep and dramatic, offering a true wilderness feel as you climb toward Umbwe Camp, your first overnight stop.
Day 2: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
Distance: ~6 km
Time: 4–6 hours
Elevation: 2,850m → 3,900m
Highlights: Stunning views of the Shira Plateau and encounters with other climbers along the Machame Route.
Leaving the forest behind, the trail ascends into the heather and moorland zone. You’ll trek along a scenic ridge with panoramic views before merging with the Machame Route and reaching the beautiful Barranco Valley.
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Distance: ~5 km
Time: 4–5 hours
Elevation: 3,900m → 3,995m
Highlights: Climb the iconic Barranco Wall and enjoy sweeping vistas of valleys and ridges.
Today begins with the exhilarating climb up the Barranco Wall, a thrilling scramble that rewards you with breathtaking views. The path continues through undulating terrain before arriving at Karanga Camp, nestled between valleys.
Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Distance: ~4 km
Time: 3–4 hours
Elevation: 3,995m → 4,673m
Highlights: Gradual climb with stunning alpine landscapes and summit preparation.
A short but steady trek leads you to Barafu Camp, perched on a rocky ridge. This is your base for the final ascent — rest early, hydrate well, and prepare mentally and physically for the upcoming summit night.
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak – then down to Mweka Camp
Distance: ~17 km total
Time: 12–15 hours
Elevation: 4,673m → 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) → 3,100m
Highlights: Summit Day! Witness a spectacular sunrise from the Roof of Africa.
You’ll begin your summit push around midnight, ascending slowly over rocky terrain to Stella Point and then to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your victory, descend to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Distance: ~10 km
Time: 3–4 hours
Elevation: 3,100m → 1,640m
Highlights: Descend through the lush forest and receive your summit certificate.
The final leg of your Kilimanjaro journey takes you through a vibrant rainforest filled with birds and colobus monkeys. At Mweka Gate, you’ll sign out, receive your summit certificate, and celebrate your incredible achievement with your team.
