Safari Overview

The Ngorongoro Crater is the collapsed cone of an extinct volcano, its walls rising over 600 metres above a self-contained floor of grassland, forest, swamp, and soda lake. Wildlife that elsewhere migrates seasonally stays here year-round, packed into roughly 260 square kilometres — making this one of the most reliable places on earth to see the Big Five in a single day.

This mega-day begins with a pre-dawn drive to the crater rim and a steep descent onto the floor as the sun rises over the caldera walls. A full day of game viewing follows, with a packed lunch beside the hippo pool and a strong chance of spotting the crater's small, closely protected population of black rhino, before the climb back out to the rim in the late afternoon.

Big Five Odds

One of the highest-density wildlife floors in Africa

Black Rhino Territory

A rare, closely monitored population on the crater floor

Tour Highlights

  • Pre-dawn departure and descent onto the crater floor at sunrise
  • High-probability sightings of lion, elephant, buffalo, and leopard
  • A strong chance of spotting the crater's rare black rhinos
  • Picnic lunch beside the Ngoitokitok hippo pool
  • Flamingo-lined soda lakes and open Serengeti-style grassland, all within one caldera
  • Sweeping views from the crater rim on both descent and ascent
  • All park fees and crater descent fees included

Best Time to Visit

The crater floor holds resident wildlife year-round, so this is a rewarding day trip in any season. The dry months of June through October bring the clearest skies and easiest driving conditions on the crater roads, while the green season from November to May is quieter, with fewer vehicles and lush scenery, though the crater floor can turn muddy after heavy rain.

Rates & Availability

Prices are per person for the complete full-day Ngorongoro Crater tour, including hotel pickup and drop-off. Rates decrease with larger groups; pickup from Karatu is more affordable than from Arusha.

Group Size Price (Per Person) Status

Price includes everything: private guiding, all park and crater descent fees, packed breakfast, picnic lunch, and hotel transfers. No hidden costs. Pickup from a hotel in Karatu or on the crater rim reduces total drive time and is reflected in a lower rate on request.

  • All park fees and crater descent fees

  • Can be combined with an overnight on the crater rim for a more relaxed pace, or added on to a wider Serengeti or Tarangire itinerary

Getting There

✈️

By Air

Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a roughly 3.5-hour drive from the crater rim via Arusha. Travellers on a wider safari itinerary can add this as a standalone day before continuing to the Serengeti.

🏨

Pickup Point

Pickup is available from any hotel in Arusha town center (pre-dawn departure around 4:30 AM) or from Karatu and lodges on the crater rim (departure around 6:00 AM). Karatu pickup is strongly recommended for a less punishing start to the day.

🚌

Ground Transport

Transport is by private 4x4 vehicle for the drive to the rim and the game drive on the crater floor itself, which requires a permitted safari vehicle at all times.

📋

What to Bring

A warm layer for the pre-dawn departure and crater rim, sunscreen, a hat, and binoculars if you have them. Cameras with a zoom lens are worthwhile given the density of sightings.

We saw all of the Big Five in a single morning, including two black rhinos in the distance. The descent at sunrise alone was worth the early start.

Long day but completely worth it. Booking the Karatu pickup instead of Arusha made the early start much more manageable.
